After taking breathtaking flight into Leh, You will be exploring around leh and visit some of its ancient Monasteries and understand the monastic life, you will drive to Lamayuru which is on the Leh Srinagar highway. Your trek will begings from this historic place where once the great saint Naropa meditate over here in 11th ce. From here you will be trek through Wanla famous for its wood carving pass Phanjila and enter into gorge towards tar la and come out to Mangy, you could visit the 11th ce monastery which was found around the same time as Alchi, this one of the 108th temple built by Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. From here either you drive or trek through gera village and come out to Ule cross over Indus an a footbridge where the vehicle will pick you up and drive to Alchi, after having a visit at Alchi drive continue to Leh.
Day 01 : Arrv Leh / Afternoon Market walk, Leh Palace & Shanti Stupa
Airport our representative would assist you at the Airport & transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure & acclimatization Later in the afternoon a walk around Leh town (3505 m) & visit Leh Market, Leh Palace & Shanti Stupa at sunset "The Japanese for World Peace built the Shanti Stupa, at Changspa, on the hilltop, and was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1992. Its state of the art work attracts a lot of tourists to Ladakh and is spectacular to watch. From there one can see spectacular view of Leh town
Overnight Hotel - Leh (B, L, D) Day 02 : Excursion to Shey, Thiksey, Hemis & Matho
Today we proceed for Indus Valley monastery tour. We start with a visit to
Shey : The ancient capital of Ladakh. The castle here has a huge copper-gilded statue of Buddha Sakyamuni with a large silver lamps offering next door.
Thiksey Gompa : An impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village. The monastery has a beautiful 30 m high gold-plated statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future. Drive further to visit the famous
Hemis Gompa : Founded in 1630's by Stag-tsang-ras-pa under the royal patronage of Sengge Namgyal. Hemis is one of the largest and richest gompa of Ladakh. The two-day festival of monastic dance in June-July has raised the reputation of Hemis particularly high. The festival is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava, popularly known as second Buddha and responsible for spreading Buddhism in the Tibetan world.
Matho : Lama Trungpa Dorje founded the Matho Gompa of Ladakh in the 16th century. It is situated on the opposite bank of the River Indus, at a distance of approximately 26 km to the southeast of Leh town. Matho is the only gompa of Ladakh that belongs to the Saskya order of Tibetan Buddhism. Every year in feb/march te Monastery celebrate their annual festival, The highlight of the festival is the two oracle which appear during the festival. There are several temples dedicated to different deities of which one is dedicated to the guardian deities.
Overnight Hotel - Leh (B, L, D) Day 03 : Leh – Basgo – Likir – Lamayuru (3420m 124km 04hrs)
After breakfast drive to Basgo (44 km from Leh). It was an important centre in the old days, having been the capital of lower Ladakh when the kingdom was divided in the 15th & 16th centuries. We visit the ruins of the Royal Palace at Basgo, Ser Zung Temple, which is known for its great frescoes & finally the temple with an enormous gold & copper statue of the Maitreya Buddha.
After that we drive to Likir (9 km) & visit Likir Monastery situated atop a windy cliff overlooking the beautiful village of Likir. It was founded in the 12th Century although the present construction dates back to the 18th century as the original one was destroyed by fire. In its courtyard is a yellow colored 3 storey high mammoth statue of the Buddha, which was constructed by a resident monk. The top floor has an impressive museum containing old thangkas & weapons used many centuries back.
We continue to drive & finally reach Lamayuru Monastery. Lamayuru Monastery is one of the most popular & magnificent monasteries of Ladakh. It is known to be the oldest monastic establishment in Ladakh & was founded by Rinchen Zangpo in the 10th century. This Monastery is located amidst the massive mountains. The spectacular setting of this Monastery & its renowned collection of carpets, thangkas & frescoes has been attracting many people all over the world over a long time. We will also be part of the prayer ceremony inside the prayer hall among the monks. It is a very soothing & spiritual experience to be there among these warm & friendly monks.
Overnight Camp - Lamayuru (B, L, D) Day 04 : Lamayuru – Wanla (3250m 3-4hrs trek)
In the morning before breakfast you may again visit the Lamayuru monastery to be part of the Morning Prayer ceremony. Today we pack our backpacks, watch the horses get ready, & set off for this first day of our adventure. A gentle trail leads up to the small pass of Prinkiti La (3750 m) before heading down to the village of Shilla & the last 3 km to Wanla (3250 m). Here we set up Camp for the night & spend the afternoon relaxing in the sun or exploring the monastery in Wanla.
Overnight Camp - Wanla (B, L, D) Day 05 : Wanla - Base of Tar La (4200 mts/13776 ft) 8 hrs
Today will be a long day past a couple of villages till you arrive at the base of Tar La.
Overnight Camp – Base of Tar La (B, L, D) Day 06 : Base of Tar La - Tar (4200 mts/14105 ft) via Tar La (5250 mts/17220 ft)
the trail ascends and descends a few times before you arrive at Tar La. The way down to the village of Tar is over boulders.
Overnight Camp – Tar (B, L, D) Day 07 : Tar - Mang Gyu 5 hrs
crossing a small pass above Tar will bring you the village of Mang Gyu. There is a small monastery in the village that is worth a visit.
Overnight Camp – Mang Gyu (B, L, D) Day 08 : Mang Gyu - Alchi
The last day's trek is a short one to the village of Gera from where a vehicle will pick you up and drop you at Alchi.
Overnight stay at camp (B, L, D) Day 09 : Alchi – Leh 2 hrs drive
After breakfast visit Alchi Monastery .Over a century old, its wall paintings are very similar to those of the Tabo monastery in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Unlike other monasteries which are usually on a cliff top or cling to a mountainside, Alchi is at ground level & is nestled in the shade of a garden. Continue drive to Leh
